Two years ago, across thousands of miles, goodbyes had to be said to fifty-two very special friends. Having worked with the residents of Camp Ashraf [members of the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI or MEK)] while serving both as senior operations officer for Task Force 134 (Detention Operations) and later as Base Commander of Camp Ashraf, I was fortunate to work with some of the finest people I have ever known. A mother’s fight for freedom in Iran
Dr. Masumeh Bolurchi vividly remembers that bitter day 24 months ago. She was up early preparing for another day in Paris to mobilize the Iranian expatriate community to rally behind the organized opposition for democratic change when at 6.00am the phone rang and she heard the words that no mother should ever have to hear.
Through a somber chord trying to mutter out the words with difficulty, another lady official of the Resistance told her that Masumeh’s only son Rahman, a young and aspiring member of the Resistance working in a refugee camp in Iraq, had been handcuffed and shot in the head, execution-style by Iranian-sponsored militias.

REMEMBERING MY FATHER AND THE HEROES OF ASHRAF

September 1st marks the two year anniversary of a horrific tragedy. A tragedy that took the lives of 52 unarmed and innocent Iranian dissidents, including my own Father. The attack, which took place in Camp Ashraf, Iraq, was not only an example of a terrible atrocity carried out by the Iranian regime, but it underscored the failure of the United Nations and the United States to live up to their obligations to protect these defenseless refugees.
Camp Ashraf had been home to 3,000 Iranian refugees over the last three decades, most of whom belonged to the principal Iranian opposition movement, the People’s Mojahedin of Iran (PMOI/MEK). Camp Ashraf was built from the ground up by dissidents who escaped the repressive regime in Iran and it soon became a symbol of resistance. Following the American invasion of Iraq, the members of the PMOI were given "protected persons" status under the Fourth Geneva Convention, and received individual guarantees of safety by the United States. The United States delegated this responsibility to the Iraqi government in 2009, despite the fact that Iraq’s Prime Minister, Nouri al-Maliki, had long been a close ally of the regime in Tehran.

NCRI – Iranian political prisoner Ali Moezi has sent a message from Iran’s notorious Central Karaj Prison in commemoration of the second anniversary of the massacre of members of Iran’s main opposition group People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran, PMOI (Mujahedin-e Khalq, MEK), in Camp Ashraf by agents of the Iraqi government at the behest of the regime in Iran.
