March 19, 2019 - In spite of widespread repressive measures, the people and the youth in different Iranian cities turned Chaharshanbe Suri (Fire Festival) ceremonies into protest movement against the mullahs’ regime.
The protests come at a time when Khamenei, afraid of popular protest movements, had affirmed in a ridiculous fatwa that “Chaharshanbe Suri (Fire Festival) has no religious basis and if leads to damage or corruption or propagation of false beliefs, not permitted.” In addition, henchmen of the mullahs regime’s judiciary had warned in various cities that they would deal severely with “those in violation.”
In Tehran and a number of cities like Kermanshah, Mashad, Karaj, Masjed Soleiman, Khoramabad, Semnan, Ilam, and Mahshahr the youth shouted: “death to Khamenei, death to the principle of Velayat-e-faqih, death to the dictator, with you dictator we would fight fire with fire”. Pictures and effigies of Khamenei and Khomeini were put on fire.
In numerous cities, people used sound grenades and firework to attack official centers. In Divandareh, Chaharshanbe Suri (Fire Festival) turned into clashes between the youth and the population with repressive forces who fired into the air to disperse the population.
In several cities like Isfahan repressive forces tried to stop ceremonies by attacking the people but were not successful.
The mullahs’ regime has tried to prevent diffusion of video-clips and photos of the popular protests through the Internet by cutting off the latter in a number of points and by reducing Internet capacity in others.
The Social headquarters of the PMOI had, in a communique dated March 1, 2019, invited the youth to, along with resistance units, put pictures and effigies of Khamenei, Khomeini and other official symbols of the mullahs’ regime on fire in every street and corner during national festivities of Chaharshanbe Suri.

Iranian Fire Festival Is Making Clerical Regime Nervous The people of Iran are preparing to celebrate the Persian New Year – Nowruz, in the next few days. However, before the start of the new Iranian calendar is marked, the people will be celebrating “Charshanbe Soori”, or the “Festival of Fire”. This year it will be celebrated on 19th March.
It is a much anticipated celebration for the Iranian people. In an outside space, the people prepare by gathering brushwood and bits of wood. Small bonfires are made with the wood and they are lit at sunset. The people then jump over the flames in an act of purification.

The End of Persian Year, Prelude to Protests in New Year
By Hossein Abedini The Persian New Year will begin next Tuesday as Iranian people face serious economic and social crises.
According to the reports and analyses, not only the Iranians recent nationwide uprising has not stopped but it has deepened.
The authorities anxiously expect new anti-regime protests in the coming New Year but before the end of the current year, the theocracy faces a dangerous situation in the night before the last Wednesday of the year, which is famously known ”Chaharshanbe Souri”.
Actually, the Chaharshanbe Souri is an ancient event, which people celebrate by making bonefire and using firecracker. For the fundamentalist clerics in Tehran, the event is a nightmare because it is an opportunity for millions of Iranians to come to the streets and new wave of protests could happen.
But this year the regime is much more frightened because Iranians are determined to turn the event into political protests.
Thus, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has mobilised its oppressive forces to control major cities and in particular the capital, Tehran, as well as Mashhad, Shiraz, Qom, Isfahan etc.

Iran’s traditional Fire Festival set to upset regime

For thousands of years now, Iran has witnessed a Fire Festival on the last Tuesday of every year. Iranians ring in the New Year on the spring equinox, which corresponds to March 20 this year. But first, they bid winter farewell by holding a national day of Charshanbeh Soori as it is called in Farsi, the language of Iran.
Charshanbeh Soori is a fire festival in the tradition of Iran’s ancient Zoroastrian religion whose adherents believed in the duality of light (good) and darkness (evil).  By lighting bonfires in the streets at the end of the last Tuesday of each year and jumping over them, Iranians sing and chant, “Let your ruddiness be mine, my paleness be yours.” They also do some trick or treating that is called spoon-banging where youngsters in disguises visit neighbors and receive snacks. No Charshanbeh Soori would be complete without fireworks.

Fearful Regime in Alert on the Verge of National Fire Festival

The regime’s security officials have expressed their deep anxiety over the potential escalation of anti-government protests during the fire festival, Chaharshanbeh Suri, to be held on the evening of Tuesday, March 13. This mood has been apparent in statements issued by Prosecutor Generals and Revolutionary Prosecutors of various provinces and cities around the country. In many cases, they have declared that they have set up a special branch to deal with violations and possible crimes related to Chaharshanbeh Suri.

IRGC Brigadier General Hossein Rahimi, commander of Greater Tehran's Police, warned on March 9 that those who would cause insecurity on Chahrshanbeh Souri (fire festival) would be arrested. He came back to the scene on March 7 and said: "Behaviors that are disruptive to the order ... is the red line of the police and we deal with them severely. The frorces will be on alert from 2:00 pm of Tuesday, and those who throw firecrackers from the vehicles and cause disturbance will be arrested themselves and their cars will be seized. We have discovered 100 million pieces of firecracker materials."
