In this letter, she has condemned the death penalty and all forms of violence. She has spoken about the death-row political prisoner Ramin Hossein Panahi and the suffering of his family.
This is the first letter she has sent out of jail, after being returned to Evin Prison’s Women’s Ward from exile in the notorious Qarchak Prison, after she and her fellow inmate, political prisoner Golrokh Iraee put up a staunch resistance and hunger strike for 81 days.

Atena Daemi

Atena Daemi The physical condition of political prisoner Atena Daemi has been reported as alarming.“After being transferred to Qarchak Prison, Atena (Daemi) has had various physical and nervous problems due to bad prison conditions and tremendous psychological pressure,” a source close to Daemi family announced on Friday, April 13, 2018.The source added, “After a month, she is still suffering from cold. Her face is numb and the right side has become motionless. Her eyes are protruding and the numbness of her face is spreading to her throat. Her teeth and jaws have also become numb.”According to this source, a neurologist has examined Ms. Daemi and diagnosed these symptoms as signs of Muscular Sclerosis (M.S.) wqhich probably has been caused by sudden shocks and nervous pressures of the recent past.

Atena Daemi and Golrokh Ebrahimi Iraee on hunger strike, facing violence from prison guards

UPDATE: As of 9 March 2018, human rights defenders Atena Daemi and Golrokh Ebrahimi Iraee are being held in a quarantine section of Shahr-e Rey prison in the town of Varamin. It is not known exactly when they were transferred from Evin prison, but it has been reported that holding conditions of the human rights defenders are poor, with only salty water provided, and that they are still wearing the clothes they wore upon arriving at Shahr-e Rey prison. As of 9 March, Golrokh Ebrahimi Iraee, who suffers from severe muscular pain, had been on hunger strike for over one month (35 days), and has reportedly been forcibly given IV fluids since her arrival to the prison.

Kurdish political prisoner Zeinab Jalalian who has been imprisoned for life in the Prison of Khoy, in northwestern Iran, sent out a letter to political prisoners Atena Daemi and Golrokh Iraee who have been banished from Evin Prison to the notorious Qarchak Prison in Varamin.

She thanked them for their letter and urged human rights organizations to take action to free all political prisoners. Her letter reads:

Hail to the free people in chains,
I am the cry of freedom coming from behind the prison’s thick walls and cold bars.
I send my best salutations to you, incarcerated freedom-lovers.
My dear comrades, Golrokh and Atena, and everyone who has remembered me. I hear you well from behind the walls. This is the Heaven’s best music. Your voice reminds of my country’s mountains standing tall and proud. (Your support) has been the most valuable gift to me during my ten years in prison.

As a poem says, “My cry did not remain without an answer, your good heart is the response to my outcry.”
My dear friends and comrades, when I was told that you are behind prison bars, my heart was broken. After a long time, I heard that you have not forgotten me and you have written to me despite all the pain, violence and hardships inflicted on you in prison.
I am truly grateful to you and I hope that with my efforts and resistance I can return all your love and kindness.
I promise you to struggle until my last drop of blood. I will struggle so that I could be worthy of you and everyone else who have remembered me in the most difficult conditions.
You are in prison for a crime you have not committed. Contrary to what they think that crying for freedom is a crime, I think it is the most beautiful and glorious charge.
Wishing for a day when no freedom lover is in prison.

In conclusion, I urge all human rights organizations to do their utmost efforts to free those who are incarcerated in the Iranian regime’s prisons for demanding freedom and equality, so that these dear ones would not spend their youth behind prison bars.

Resistance is life.

To remain as a thorn in the eyes of my enemies – Atena Daemi

Woman political prisoner Atena Daemi sent an audio message from the Quarantine ward of Qarchak Prison in Varamin and announced, “I ended my hunger strike today, February 15, 2018, to stay alive and remain as a thorn in the eyes of my enemies.”

In another part of this audio message, she said, “I end my hunger strike so that my pen will continue to target your hearts. And I tell you, ‘Don’t tire yourselves because I will never back down from my positions. I will never apologize for the crime I have not committed, because as a human being I am entitled to freedom of speech, opinion and protest, and no one should deprive me of my rights. I tell you that every day I will let the world know of the lack of independence of the Judiciary and the injustice and oppression. Every day, I will shout in your ears of your own laws being broken by yourselves. You beat up and brutalized and arrested my family. Wait for the consequences of this savagery.”
Atena Daemi also noted the critical conditions of Golrokh Iraee who is still on hunger strike. She said in part, “On Tuesday, February 13, Golrokh switched her dry hunger strike back to wet due her deteriorating conditions. Now, she is taking only water, sugar and salt. She is not well. I will continue to support her with all my existence and together, we are going to insist that the principle of the separation of prisoners’ categories must be upheld.”
Maryam Akbari Monfared speaks out in defense of former inmates

Political prisoner, Maryam Akbari Monfared, imprisoned in the Women’s Ward of Evin, sent out an open letter to protest officials’ lack of reaction to the hunger strike of her former inmates, Atena Daemi and Golrokh Iraee. She wrote in her letter:

I am reaching out from Evin Prison, from behind concrete walls to international organizations and human rights institutes to beseech everyone whose heart beats for humanity to hear the cries of the mothers of Golrokh (Iraee) and Atena (Daemi). The mothers’ hopes are tied to your assistance.
Everyone knows of the phrase “hunger strike.” But it is very different to hear of this phrase or to watch a human being who is on hunger strike suffer. They are under a flurry of pain and the body melts bit by bit. They have no other way but to continue their path. They get physically weaker everyday, but they become ever more determined with every passing day.
Masoumeh Nemati and Atena Daemi

Massoumeh Nemati and Haniyeh Daemi, mother and sister of Iranian political prisoner Atena Daemi, and Farangis Mazloumi, mother of political prisoner Soheil Arabi, were arrested Tuesday morning, February 13, 2018, outside the Evin Prison in Tehran. The first two were released after a few hours.

A number civil and human rights activists gathered outside Evin Prison to demand release of those arrested during the urprising, but security forces prevented their assembly and dispersed the crowd. Atena Daemi’s mother and sister were arrested in this place.

On the fourth day of their dry hunger strike, Atena Daemi and Golrokh Iraee are in critical conditions. Atena cannot speak and foams at the mouth. Golrokh is in a state of shock.

Women political prisoners, Atena Daemi and Golrokh Iraee, were beaten up and unlawfully banished from Evin Prison’s Women’s Ward to the notorious Qarchak Prison in Varamin, on January 24, 2018.

Mr. Daemi said the officials are not responding to his inquiries. He holds the Prosecutor and his assistant accountable if his daughter is harmed in any way.

Last night tens of thousands of people took part in in an internet campaign supporting Atena Daemi and Golorkh Iraee.

Ensiyeh Daemi, Atena’s sister, wrote in a tweet that she had to write down her sister’s last will on the phone as her sister could not properly talk.

Mr. Daemi said the officials are not responding to his inquiries. He also added “If my daughters die in prison, it will not be by suicide, they will be killed. I am Atena_Daemi’s father and I hold Iranian authorities responsible for the lives of my children.”

The two political prisoners began their hunger strike on Friday, February 3, 2018, protesting their unlawful transfer to the notorious Varamin’s Qarchak Prison.

In a statement released on February 3, they announced they are refusing food in protest to the Iranian regime’s breach of the principle of classification and separation of prisoners.

On the morning of Saturday, February 10, 2018, they began their dry hunger strike, as they had declared before.

They are demanding their own simultaneous return to the Evin Prison’s women’s ward and the return to Evin of political prisoner Soheil Arabi, who is also in exile in Gohardasht Prison. Soheil Arabi, a writer, blogger and activist, went on hunger strike on January 25, 2018, to protest the illegal banishment of the two imprisoned women.

Political prisoners Atena Daemi:
a rebel not afraid of saying the truth an audio clip sent out from Qarchak Prison.

Two female political prisoners, Atena Daemi and Golrokh Iraee, started an indefinite hunger strike on Saturday, February 3, to protest their “illegal transfer” to Qarchak prison.

The two political prisoners issued a letter announcing that they have given ten days to judicial authorities to return them to Evin prison.

They have been on hunger strike since Saturday to protest against “violations of the law on the separation of crimes and illegal transfer” to Qarchak prison.

The two political prisoners threatened to go on dry hunger strike and refrain from drinking water if the authorities did not return them to Evin prison in a week and if they did not return Soheil Arabi, a political prisoner, to his former ward.

Meanwhile, the political prisoner, Arash Sadeghi, has already started a hunger strike to protest the “beating and illegal transfer” of his wife, Golrokh Iraee, and their friend, Atena Daemi, to Qarchak prison in Varamin.

In addition, Soheil Arabi has started a new round of hunger strike protesting the beating and mayhem of the civil activists, Atena Daemi and Golrokh Iraee.

The new charges laid against the two female political prisoners announced to be “disruption of the prison order”.

Golrek Ebrahimi Iraee was arrested on 6 September 2014, along with her husband, Arash Sadeghi. She was sentenced to 6 years imprisonment in Branch 15 of Tehran's Revolutionary Court on May 2015, on charges of “insulting the sanctities and spreading propaganda against the regime,” which were later confirmed at Branch 54 of the Appeals Court.

The 29-year-old Atena (Fatima) Daemi was arrested on 21 October 2014 and placed in solitary confinement in ward 2A under interrogation for 86 days. She was transferred to the women's ward of Evin prison on 18 January 2015, after interrogations ended.

She was sentenced to 14 years in prison for "propaganda against the regime, gathering and collusion against national security, insulting the leadership, insulting the founder of the regime and hiding the reasons of the crime.” The verdict was reduced by the appeal court to seven years of imprisonment.

The Prosecutor’s representative in Tehran’s Evin Prison announced that Atena Daemi will not be returned to Evin. This news was published on Sunday, January 28, 2018.

In reaction to the repeated referrals of the Daemi family to Evin Prison, seeking their daughter’s return to Evin, Haji Moradi said, “Don’t ever think of her returning. I will not let her come back to Evin.”

Political prisoners Atena Daemi and Golrokh Iraee were transferred to the notorious Qarchak Prison for women in Varamin on Wednesday, January 24, 2018, after being badly beaten up. The transfer was ordered by Haji Moradi after fabricating a new case against them and in total disregard of the rule to keep prisoners in separate categories.

Human rights activists Atena Daemi and Golrokh Ibrahimi Iraee have declared that if these conditions continue and they are not returned to Evin, they will go on hunger strike.

In protest to this illegal transfer, political prisoners Soheil Arabi and Arash Sadeghi (Golrokh’s husband) have already gone hunger strike.

Mr. Hossein Daemi, Atena’s father, tweeted, “Despite all the incidents and the horrible prison conditions in Qarchak of Varamin, my daughter is resistant and strong as ever.”

Atena Daemi’

The parents of Iranian political prisoner Atena Daemi wrote a letter to Ms. Asma Jahangir, UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Iran, to protest the beating and transfer of their daughter from the women’s ward of Evin to Qarchak Prison. In parts of their letter they wrote:

We urge you, not only because of your heavy responsibility as the UNSR on human rights, but as a woman, a mother and as a human being, to convey our voice, the voice of Hossein Daemi and Massoumeh Nemati, a father and a mother who have started their day with the news of vicious beating of their imprisoned daughter. Our daughter’s life is in danger!

On January 25, Atena Daemi and her cellmate, Golrokh Ibrahimi Iraee, were violently beaten up and transferred to the Quarantine of Qarchak Prison, without informing her lawyer, without observing humanitarian and legal standards, and without allowing them to take their personal belongings with them.

This is while Atena has spent the best years of her life in prison on heavy sentences for defending the rights of children, insisting on women’s human rights, defending human beings and opposing the death penalty. But this is not enough for the Iranian regime’s judiciary and throughout her imprisonment, they have made their best efforts so that Atena and her family do not experience calm…

We, hereby, urge you to use your good offices to have Atena released. It is not fair for Atena to remain in prison. Please help free our daughter.

NCRI Women’s Committee Calls for the Freedom of Atena Daemi and Golrokh Iraee

The torturers of the anti-human regime of mullahs transferred ladies Atena Daemi and Golrokh Iraee, two female political prisoners, to the Qarchak prison in Varamin on Wednesday, January 24, after beating them brutally.
This repressive act was carried out following a new frame-up against the two detainees who were summoned to the IRGC ward, named as ward 2-A, for interrogation.  In response to the protest of these two women prisoners who refused to be interrogated and requested for transfer warrant, the torturers beat them severely. At night, on the orders of Haji Moradi, a torturer serving as prosecutor in Evin Prison , these two female prisoners were transferred to the Qarchak prison in Varamin.
29-year-old Atena, a human rights activist and child rights activist, was charged by the regime's judiciary for 'propaganda against the regime, holding gatherings and collusion against national security,' and insulting Khamenei to seven years in prison, and Gulkah Iravi, a human rights activist, was also charged with 'insulting the sacred' and insulting Khamenei to six years in prison.
The Qarchek prison in Varamin is known as ‘the second Kahrizak’ among the people for its horrible conditions. The mullahs’ regime transfers female political prisoners to this place by violating the principle of separation of crimes.
The atrocities committed against Atena Daemi and Golrokh Iraee, are the mullahs’ regime’s vengeful reaction to their support for the uprising of the Iranian people, and to intimidate brave Iranian women, especially female students, who played a significant role in the nationwide uprising of the Iranian people.
While expressing its disgust at the mullahs’ regime’s brutalities against female political prisoners, the NCRI Women's Committee calls on all international authorities, especially the High Commissioner for Human Rights, the Special Rapporteur on the situation of  human rights in Iran, the Working Group on Arbitrary Arrests, the Rapporteur on Torture, and all defenders of women’s rights to take immediate action to address the situation of political prisoners, especially the two women prisoners and their unconditional release.

Atena Daemi, Golrokh Iraee beaten and banished to Qarchak Prison

Two women political prisoners of Evin –Atena Daemi and Golrokh Iraee—were beaten up and banished to the notorious women’s Qarchak Prison, in Varamin, Tehran Province.

The prisoners of the women’s ward of Evin had resisted interrogation over a fabricated case recently filed against them. They were beaten on Wednesday, January 24, 2018, and transferred out of Evin.

Varamin’s Qarchak Prison is a notorious detention center for ordinary and dangerous women criminals where the living conditions are viciously below the standard. Women political prisoners are transferred to Qarchak for physical and psychological torture.

Atena Daemi and Golrokh Iraee had been summoned to court on January 17, 2018, but refused to appear in court in protest to the legitimacy of the case and the court.

On January 24, they were summoned for the fifth time to court and subsequently taken to Evin’s Ward 2A for interrogation. The interrogators viciously beat them up after they resisted and ultimately transferred them to Qarchak Prison.

Ms. Daemi and Ms. Iraee were serving their seven and six-year prison sentences, respectively.

Female Political Prisoner Appealing Justice for the Victims of 1988 Massacre
The Appeal by political prisoner Maryam Akbari Monfared for justice for her family massacred in the 1980s by Iranian regime finally succeeded as the United Nations’ Working Group on Forced Disappearances accepted (to address) her complaint. This is a major development in the pursuit of the perpetrators of the massacre of political prisoners in the 1980s in Iran in order to bring them to justice.
Atena Daemi, a civil and women’s rights activist incarcerated in Evin prison, in response to the success of Maryam Akbari Monfared has written a letter of congratulations and described it as a worthwhile success and has expressed hope that her steps would be followed by other victims of human rights abuses in Iran.

Atena Daemi reveals abysmal medical conditions in Evin Prison

Atena Daemi was supposed to be tried on new charges filed by Evin’s infirmary Sunday morning, October 22, 2017. The human rights activist who is presently incarcerated in the Women’s Ward of Evin Prison refused to attend the trial.
She had already declared that she would not attend the court because she deemed the trial as being “unjust” and the fact that the director of the infirmary, Charmahali, and its physician, Abbas Khani, had to be “prosecuted for denying medical treatment” to prisoners.
Instead, she sent out and published an open letter on the abysmal medical conditions in Evin Prison. Parts of her letter read:
There are no stretchers or wheelchairs in the prison, so four of us have to lift the patient and take her 25 steps down the stairs.
The patients’ stretcher does not fit into the ambulance and the back doors have to be left open during the patient’s transfer to hospital, leaving her head out of the car...
There is a small wooden bed in the corner of the infirmary which shakes and cannot bear the weight of even a 25-kilogram patient.
There is a physician who is called Shahriari. He is supposed to specialize in internal medicine but he is more like an interrogator who needs to know your charges before he starts his examinations to diagnose your illness!...
Of course, there are honorable doctors, too, who get reprimanded by the warden for attending to the patients, especially if they are political prisoners.
The pharmacy puts medications of sick prisoners in special boxes every night. Apparently, the boxes used to be white, but now they are black. Often times, the medications are, deliberately or inadvertently, put into the wrong boxes!!! The patient must swallow all her pills with one glass of water in front of the prison guard! There have been cases where the prisoner had to swallow 18 pills at once!
If you are a woman and you are prescribed by the physician to have a cardiograph or even receive an injection, then the male nurses are religiously forbidden to attend to you. Then, you would have to be sent to a hospital to receive a simple injection, which the prison warden forbids, or wait for the female nurse to come during the office hours…
Eventually, if there is an emergency, there has to be some back and forth, and then the doctor concludes that a female guard who is accompanying the patient and has no knowledge of anything would have to do the cardiograph. Then the patient is laid on the bed and the female guard stands over her head. She has to grab her chador (black veil) by one hand and with the other she has to clamp the sensors from over your clothes according to the instructions the male nurse gives from behind a partition...
Dental care is another story. Its cost for prisoners who have no source of income is more expensive that visitation fee for the best doctors in Iran and the world. And they put their hands without any gloves into your mouth and there is no autoclave...
The infirmary’s director, Abbas Khani, is a wrestling manager who claims to be a doctor. But he knows neither the principles of wrestlers nor the ethics of doctors.
He claimed that I was healthy. He denied that I was having pain. He cancelled my hospital visits and advised the Prosecutor’s Office that I was completely healthy. He continued to deny until I confronted him. I told him that he was a butcher and nothing more. He and his boss, Charmahali, brazenly filed complaints and leveled charges against me. When the trial was to convene for the second time, I did not attend.
They concealed the hospital’s test results from me. They insulted me and stressed that I was healthy. But Atena has a father and some acquaintances who would find out the test results and the CT scans for me despite all the trouble. The test results indicated that I had to be urgently operated on. My gallbladder had to be immediately emptied due to infection and kidney stones…
Eventually, after a few months and after it was proven that I was sick, I was hospitalized, underwent surgery under heavy security conditions to remove all the gallstones from my gallbladder.
Now, one can imagine the death of Hoda Saber in the same infirmary! And the deaths of Shahrokh Zamani, Afshin Osanlou, and Mohsen Dokmechi. And the conditions of Alireza Rajaii, Omid Kokabi and Arash Sadeghi, and Mohammad Jarrahi who recently died of chronic illness.
You can also imagine hundreds of sick prisoners who die in silence because of the crimes of Charmahali and Khani and their likes, without anyone knowing of their names or conditions...
I declare to Mohammad Javad Zarif, that as an Iranian, not only I’m not a member of the IRGC but I am in jail due to the IRGC’s crimes and maliciousness. Today, not only me, but hundreds of thousands of prisoners have lost our security and health due to the IRGC’s instructions to the prison wardens and heads of infirmary.

On 31 May 2017, Atena Daemi ended the hunger strike she began on 8 April 2017. In an act of protest, Atena Daemi refuses to undergo surgery
Political prisoner Atena Daemi was returned to Iran’s Evin Prison after she did not agree to be hospitalized with handcuffs and shackles.
Her mother, Massoumeh Nemati, explained that Atena Daemi had to undergo gallbladder surgery at the Khomeini Hospital (on Monday, September 25, 2017).
Based on orders from the warden of Evin Prison, however, she was supposed to keep her handcuffs and shackles all the time while in hospital. She did not agree to this form of hospitalization and was returned to Evin Prison.
According to Mrs. Nemati, the warden of Evin had already banned Atena from having a companion or any visits. She wondered, “I do not understand how a prisoner, who has been imprisoned for her beliefs, could escape from the hospital? Where can she escape to?”
Mrs. Nemati also pointed out that the representative of Tehran’s Prosecutor, Haj MOradi, had made some promises. “Yesterday, Atena's father met with Haj Moradi, who verbally promised that she would not be handcuffed or shackled. He said she could even have visitors and even a companion. Today, after Atena was returned to prison, her father once again went to the Prosecutor’s Office but was told that they could do nothing and that the orders of the prison’s warden had to be carried out,” Mrs. Nemati said.

The head of Evin's infirmary was introduced as one of the plaintiffs in Atena Daemi's case. This healthcare official expressed concern since the media had earlier reflected his attitude towards the prisoners of conscience as well as the violation of rights. He also intimidated to revenge on some of the prisoners including Atena Daemi for naming him in their letters.
One of the notorious personnel of Evin Prison named Abbas Khani also filed a lawsuit against another prisoner, Maryam Zarghan who was on the brink of release.
The Warden of Evin Prison is another plaintiff of Atena Daemi. According to the interrogator, Atena Daemi is accused of breaching the peace of prison with her hunger strike and sit-in protests. She committed these acts to call for the implementation of human rights and review on her case. She is also charged with insulting the prison's authorities when they accused her of malingering following her hunger strike and her transfer to the infirmary.

Atena Daemi is currently detained in women’s ward of Evin Prison. She is in her 9th months of temporary arrest and waiting for the verdict of the appeal's court.
In her defense, Atena Daemi requested the interrogator to allow her trusted physician to be present in the court and give testimony on her critical health condition in time of hunger strike so that they realize there was no malingering. The head of the infirmary is actually the person that should be prosecuted for the charges of depriving prisoners from medical services as well as accusing them.
A source close to Atena Daemi confirmed the report and stated, 'Abbas Khani visited the women's ward of Evin Prison and told Ms. Daemi that she didn't have any health issues, according to the medical tests. However, Atena believes that the hospital doctor has forged the medical records. The claim was made on the same day that Atena's doctor had given her Monuril (a strong antibiotic) for her illness.
It is noteworthy that Abbas Khani prohibited Atena’s transfer to the hospital on July 17, 2017, in retaliation, however, her transfer had been earlier confirmed by the prosecutor.'
